A census done in 1991 shows 2,533 permanent and 12,296 seasonal residents lived in the Township. The Lake of Bays lake is one of the largest in the Muskoka District. There is about 563 kilometres of shoreline and the lake is thought to be 79.2 metres deep in places. The area even has a legendary lake monster which many believe is a hoax and others have sworn to have seen and signed statements as far back as 1959 to the fact.
